Is Medical Weight Loss Right for You?

Medical weight loss is for adults who want to lose weight without surgery, or who aren’t ready to consider surgery yet. It may be a good fit if you:

Not sure which option fits you? That’s what the first visit is for. Dr. Siegal offers medication, endoscopic procedures and surgery, so your recommendation is based on what fits you, not on the one treatment a clinic happens to sell.

What's Included in Your Medical Weight Loss Program

GLP-1 Prescribing & Management

If you're a candidate, Dr. Siegal prescribes a GLP-1 medication such as semaglutide (Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Zepbound) and manages it with you: starting at the right dose, increasing it safely, handling side effects like nausea, and adjusting when your weight loss slows.

Other Weight Loss Medications

GLP-1s aren't the only option. When appropriate, Dr. Siegal also prescribes other FDA-approved weight loss medications, such as phentermine.

Monthly Weight Checks

In-person visits every month, always with Dr. Siegal, keep you on track and let us change course early if your progress stalls.

Lab Work When Needed

We order labs before and during treatment when your health history calls for it, such as blood sugar, thyroid or kidney function.

Dietitian Referral on Request

Want help with meal planning and protein goals while your appetite is lower? We'll refer you to a dietitian whenever you'd like one.

A Plan for What's Next

If medication alone doesn't get you to your goal, you're already working with a surgeon who can offer the next step.

When Medication Isn't Enough

GLP-1 medications work well for many people, but not for everyone. Some patients plateau, can’t tolerate the side effects, lose coverage, or regain weight after stopping. When that happens, you have options here.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

For patients who want a non-surgical procedure with no incisions.

Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass

For patients with more weight to lose or conditions like diabetes or reflux.

Medication Plus a Procedure

For patients who want to keep weight off long term. We’ll discuss whether combining treatments makes sense for you.

Why Choose a Weight Loss Surgeon for Medical Weight Loss?

Most medical weight loss clinics and med spas offer one thing: medication, often prescribed by someone who isn’t a physician or formally trained in bariatrics. Dr. Siegal is a board-certified general surgeon with fellowship training in bariatric surgery, and he treats obesity across the full range of options.

How Our Medical Weight Loss Program Works

1

Consultation. Meet Dr. Siegal in person. He’ll review your weight history, health conditions and medications, and talk through your goals.

2

Your plan. If a weight loss medication is right for you, we’ll explain how it works, what side effects to expect and how we’ll check your progress. We order baseline labs if needed.

3

Monthly weight checks. In-person visits with Dr. Siegal every month to track your weight, adjust your dose and manage side effects.

4

Support along the way. Lab work when needed and a referral to a dietitian whenever you’d like one.

5

Next steps if needed. If your weight loss stalls, Dr. Siegal will review your options with you, including what to do when a GLP-1 isn’t working.

Insurance and Self-Pay Options

We see patients with insurance and patients who prefer to self-pay. Coverage for weight loss visits and GLP-1 medications varies a lot from plan to plan, so our team will help you check your benefits before you start. If your plan doesn’t cover the medication, we’ll talk through other options with you.

Medical Weight Loss FAQs

Results vary from person to person. In large clinical trials, adults taking semaglutide lost an average of about 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks (STEP 1, NEJM 2021). Adults on the highest dose of tirzepatide lost an average of about 21% over 72 weeks (SURMOUNT-1, NEJM 2022).

No, but it's worth knowing that large scientific studies consistently show bariatric surgery to be a more durable, cost-effective and better long-term solution for weight loss over time (JAMA Surgery, 2025). However, medications remain a viable alternative or complement to weight loss procedures. Dr. Siegal will help you decide which approach fits you best.

The most common are nausea, constipation, diarrhea and a smaller appetite, usually while the dose is going up. Less common risks include gallbladder problems and pancreatitis. These medications aren't right for everyone, including people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer. Dr. Siegal will review your history before prescribing.

Many people regain weight after stopping. In one study, patients regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year of stopping semaglutide (STEP 1 extension, 2022). We'll plan for the long term from the start.
